Face to Face with Michael Gilligan Glen Head, New York
Coach Seamus Reilly, Director of recruitment in the USA is delighted to announce Michael Gilligan as the latest prospect to sign with the UDA Soccer Academy in Chester, England.
Michael is no stranger to the UK having traveled there on a soccer tour last year. He had plenty of choices to continue his academic and playing career.
So why did he decide on the UDA Academy in Chester?
Michael stated, “I chose UDA Soccer at The University of Chester for many reasons. One major reason I made this decision is the opportunity to work with a great staff that can help me achieve my goals. I also like the idea of playing soccer all year instead of three months like it is here in the US. I feel this program will enable me to reach my full potential as a soccer player.”
Michael stated further, “Playing soccer for UDA I have a couple goals I want to achieve. A personal goal of mine is to make a name for my self and continue to grow as a soccer player. I feel I will be able to achieve that goal at UDA with the quality of all their coaching staff. Another goal of mine is to build great chemistry with the team and enjoy the whole experience and exposure.”
When asked about his academic decision Michael siad, “What attracts me most to the academic course at The University of Chester is that I can achieve my business degree in three years, rather than four, which is a huge savings for my family. I also love the fact that I will be integrated academically with all students rather than just other soccer players, in my opinion making it a very balanced student experience and learning environment.”
We asked Michael to chose a quote from a famous player and he chose Lionel Messi.
“This quote below relates to me because I want to follow my passion and my dream and coming to England is a big decision. Leaving friends and family is a sacrifice but it’s all for the best.”
“I always thought I wanted to play professionally, and I always knew to do that I will have to make a lot of sacrifices. I made the sacrifice by leaving Argentina, leaving my family to start a new life. I got new friends, new people in my life, everything...but everything I did, I did for football, to achieve my dream.” - Lionel Messi
Michael added, “Lionel Messi is my favorite player and not just because he’s one of the best but because he doesn’t have a big ego and he never says he’s the best. In every game he works hard for the full 90 minutes and never gives up, that’s what I love most about him”
Michael ended by stating, “Choosing to attend this program and the University of Chester allows me the opportunity of a lifetime. To study abroad and get my business degree while playing the sport that I love so much is a dream come true. I’m beyond thankful for this opportunity and everyone who has supported me in my decision. I can’t wait to get started!"
